Discover the striking vineyards of the Douro Valley
There is no other region quite like it on earth; home to port wine, river cruises, and terraced vineyards all beautifully set in a UNESCO World Heritage landscape. The vineyards of the Douro Valley are the oldest demarcated wine region in the world. Visiting these steep, painstakingly crafted vineyards is an absolute must whilst you are in the region. Ask yourself how these vineyards were planted. They are a worldclass feat of engineering. Machinery cannot access these vines - tending the vines and harvesting the grapes is all done by hand. Occasionally a donkey may help with the work.
Come to the Douro Valley at harvest time (around September each year) and you can take part in the traditional foot tredding of the port grapes. This is an experience not to be missed. What a workout and what a memory to make!
Trips to the Douro Valley usually start with a flight into Porto. Porto is a couple of hours drive from the Douro Valley and is where the port wines are matured, before they are shipped to market. Spending a couple of days exploring this beautiful coastal city is a must. Take time to sample to exceptional seafood available here. Enjoy exploring the wealth of stunning architecture - a visit to the Livaria Lello bookshop is a must. Surely there cannot be a more beautiful bookshop anywhere else in the World?! Indulge in a delicious Pastel de Nata, the custard tarts that Portugal makes so well. A top tip of ours is to explore the impressive Mercardo do Bolhao. Buy a glass of sparkling wine and sip as you shop in this modern food and craft market.

Across on the south side of the Douro river from Porto, is Vila Nova de Gaia. This is the heartland of Port production and home to many famous port brands. Tours of these incredible cellars are readily available. Speak to Wine Travel Experts about which tour would be best for you. We are partial to a glass of aged tawny port whenever we are in the region. Simply divine!
Transport options vary for getting out into the Douro Valley itself. Public transport or self drive are common options to discuss. We recommend ensuring a river cruise is at least part of your journey into the terraced vineyards. This is the most relaxing way of absorbing the striking scenery of this famous region.
